There are myriad reasons to inquire about rhinoplasty. You might not like the look of your nose due to your genetics, or an injury, or you might have trouble breathing due to a deviated septum. What is Rhinoplasty?

Rhinoplasty is the medical term for reshaping the nose. As one of the most defining characteristics of the face, even subtle alterations can significantly improve one’s confidence in their facial features.

Plastic surgery techniques for rhinoplasty, or nasal surgery, have significantly evolved and improved in recent years to avoid complications seen with earlier techniques. No longer is the emphasis on simply removing bone and cartilage; it now focuses on precisely reshaping and repositioning these structures to provide a better-appearing and functioning nose.

Dr. Barr has years of experience in surgical correction of both the inside and outside of the nose. Dr. Barr always tailors the procedure to the individual, creating a natural rhinoplasty result that is aesthetically balanced to the face.

Who is a Good Candidate for Rhinoplasty?

Do you want to improve your breathing?

Do you have an asymmetrical nose or a bump that stands out?

Are you unhappy with the overall shape of your nose?

If you don’t like your profile due to the shape or placement of your nose, you might be a good candidate for rhinoplasty. Patients seeking rhinoplasty in Utah often want to correct the following conditions:

  • Asymmetrical nose
  • Crooked nose
  • Deviated septum
  • Disproportionately-sized nose
  • Dorsal hump on nose bridge
  • Droopy nose or tip
  • Hanging columella
  • Large nostrils
  • Pinched nose tip
  • Saddle Nose

Whether your concern is related to function or cosmetics, the team at Barr is available to consult with you about what you can expect from a nose job procedure.

Be advised: It’s best that rhinoplasty is performed on patients in overall good health, who are not currently pregnant or nursing. We often see the best cosmetic surgery results in patients who refrain from smoking and/or drinking alcohol for 6 – 12 weeks before the procedure.

What Happens at a Rhinoplasty Consultation?

During your rhinoplasty surgical consultation, Dr. Barr will use a computer to illustrate changes to the shape of your nose. Computer simulations of the rhinoplasty surgery during this part of the process serve to show what is and is not possible with the rhinoplasty procedure.

These images may also give you an idea of how you will look after the surgery. When talking with Dr. Barr you will discuss potential options and routes when it comes to what you want your nose to look like post-surgery.

How Much Does Rhinoplasty Cost ?

According to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, the average cost of a nose job is $5,483. With the addition of anesthesia and surgery room fees, rhinoplasty in Utah can range from $5,000 to $8,000. If insurance is willing to cover any of the cost, it will likely be in the form of reimbursement.

Barr Aesthetics does offer financing options for plastic surgery, which you can learn more about HERE.

Is Rhinoplasty Covered by Insurance?

If your rhinoplasty is solely for aesthetic purposes, it’s rare for insurance to cover the costs of the plastic surgery procedure. However, if the rhinoplasty is to correct damage from an injury or to improve breathing, there’s a possibility you can get partial insurance coverage for the procedure.

When consulting with Barr Aesthetics about your rhinoplasty in Utah, discuss the reasons for the surgery; if it’s more than just cosmetic, you can take that information to your insurance provider to discuss coverage. You may need to submit proof that the rhinoplasty is for functional purposes, which you can obtain from our offices.

What’s It Like to Have Rhinoplasty?

Whether an open or closed rhinoplasty, incisions are made in such a way that any resulting scars are imperceptible under or inside the nostrils. Most patients tolerate the procedure well with minimal discomfort and may only require local anesthesia. If advised, general anesthesia can be administered for this outpatient procedure; in that case, you’ll be asleep during the procedure.

Either way, you won’t be able to feel pain while undergoing rhinoplasty.

What Should I Expect During Recovery After My Rhinoplasty?

After your rhinoplasty, your nose is splinted and bandaged to support it in recovery. The splint helps preserve the new shape and structure of your nose, so leave it on as dictated by your surgeon (typically one week).

If applicable, stitches in your incisions will dissolve naturally. If staples were used in your procedure, they will need to be removed by the surgeon sometime in the first week post-op.

Pain medication can be prescribed to help with discomfort following your nose job, and you can use cold compresses to help reduce swelling.

Expect to see bruising and swelling around your nose and eyes for up to a month post-op. You may not be able to breathe out of your nose immediately following your procedure, and you should keep your head elevated for at least a week.

Dr Lucy Barr did my rhinoplasty in April of this year and I’m over the moon with how amazing it is. Every step of the process was painless and I was given excellent care by her, her husband (Dr Sharma did my functionality surgery at the same time) and her staff. My results exceed my expectations. I’m so pleased!

As for the laser treatment itself? Perfect. Talking to friends who have done the same procedure at other places, I was smart to have chosen Barr. The results are better than I even expected. If I ever need anything else that they can do for me, you bet I’ll be back in their office.

David Farrison

I beyond enjoyed my experiences coming in for over a year to get laser hair removal.

Procedures that Complement Rhinoplasty

It’s not uncommon for patients to do additional procedures when having a rhinoplasty. To complement your new nose, you might consider the following cosmetic procedures available at Barr Aesthetics:

Like fillers and Botox can also enhance the impact your rhinoplasty has on your overall appearance.

Frequently Asked Questions About Rhinoplasty

Yes, there are open and closed rhinoplasty procedures.

Open Rhinoplasty: A small incision is made across the columella (the skin between both nostrils) so the skin can be lifted up and off the tip of the nose. This exposes the bone and cartilage so the surgeon can have access to reshaping. Once complete, the skin is draped back over the nose and the columella is stitched back together.

Closed Rhinoplasty: Incisions are made inside the nostrils and soft tissues are separated from bone and cartilage inside the nose. The surgeon reshapes the structure by either removing or adding cartilage inside the nose.

If you are in good health and have realistic expectations for the results of the procedure, rhinoplasty might be right for you. If you want to make subtle changes to the appearance of your nose or improve its function, you might be a good candidate for rhinoplasty Utah.

Immediately following rhinoplasty, you’ll see some of the results. Expect swelling and bruising around your nose and eyes for a few weeks post-op. Within two weeks, the swelling and bruising should subside enough that the full effect of the surgery is visible. Please note, however, that it can take up to a full year for your nose and face to heal completely.

Rhinoplasty can give your nose the shape you want to better fit your other existing features. A nose job can also improve breathing and help you regain confidence in your looks.

It’s best to wait 2 – 3 weeks before resuming strenuous activities after rhinoplasty.

Give yourself at least one week off from work after your nose job. More time off is ideal to give yourself time to rest and recover.

Refrain from blowing your nose for at least one week post-op. Also, avoid rubbing your nose for up to 8 weeks.
