In the cosmetic surgery industry, facial lines are separated into two categories, both of which can be treated with Botox:

Botox, also known as botulinum toxin injections, is a popular non-surgical cosmetic treatment that reduces fine lines and wrinkles by temporarily freezing facial muscles. Botox is a quick and safe procedure that smoothes lines between your eyebrows, on your forehead, and around your eyes.

Botox is a natural, purified protein that works to prevent nerve impulses from reaching targeted muscles and inhibit muscle movement in the face. The muscles can then relax, resulting in a smooth appearance and helping to prevent the further definition of wrinkles and allowing your skin to smooth out.

Botox is not the same as a dermal filler. Botox freezes muscles, whereas fillers add volume under the skin using hyaluronic acid and other similar compounds or substances. Like Botox, fillers need to be readministered depending on how quickly a patient metabolizes them.

Botox is suitable for both men and women to use.

Botox is most often used in the forehead, in the brow area, and around the eyes.

Depending on what area you want to be treated with Botox, Dr. Barr will determine how many units you need. Botox is priced by units because everyone is unique and may need a different amount of Botox administered depending on the area, gender, size, and strength of the muscles.

Units vary in cost depending on where you go for your Botox and your needs can range anywhere from 2 units in some places on your face to up to 30 in others.

Your health care prior to Botox may need to vary slightly for the best results. In the week before your Botox injection, it’s recommended you avoid:

  • Blood thinners
  • Alcohol
  • Retinol

There is generally little to no downtime when it comes to Botox. After your session, you will most likely see some redness and swelling around the injection site. Though rare, some clients have a headache after injection.

After your botox has been administered, we recommend you avoid rubbing your face to prevent the botox from migrating to unwanted areas of your face.

You will start to see results in just 3-10 days. Using Botox consistently will help prevent permanent wrinkles from forming. Results from Botox can last for 3-6 months. With continued use, the muscles will weaken over time, allowing you to extend the time between treatment intervals.

If you choose to discontinue the use of Botox, the lines will gradually return over time and you will begin seeing fine lines again.

The most common side effects of Botox injections are redness or swelling at the injection site; it may look similar to a bee sting until the swelling subsides in a few days. Other side effects could include:

  • Rash

Use an SPF of at least 30 on your face every day. According to the American Cancer Society, SPF 30 can block up to 97% of UVB rays. SPF protection is even more important for sensitive skin.

While an allergic reaction to Botox is rare, symptoms would look like itchy rashes or hives, difficulty breathing, or facial swelling.

I traveled from Los Angeles to Salt Lake to have my blepharoplasty (eyelid surgery) performed by Dr. Barr because I knew she was exceptionally qualified as an ENT facial plastic surgeon. I had a wonderful experience. Dr. Barr understood (better than I did) my desired outcomes and provided excellent alternatives to a mini-facelift (which I thought I needed). The blepharoplasty was amazingly pain-free with a local anesthetic, and I had minimal swelling and bruising. Because I work remotely, the only downtime I experienced was the afternoon of the procedure. A week after the operation, it was hard to tell that I had had any work done!

Besides the blepharoplasty, my treatment included strategic filler, lightened melasma, and Kybella to shrink jowls. In addition, I started a round of EMface sessions (which I finished in LA) to lift and tone my facial muscles and skin. It's been a month, and the results are stunning. Because it takes the results of Kybella and EMface longer to fully appear, I feel like I am getting younger every day.

All of the clinic staff I met were lovely. Elle guided me through the process and ensured that I always had the information and products I needed in her kind and timely manner. She deftly and efficiently provided laser treatment to help minimize bruising. Whitney conducted my EMface therapy, and her calm, confident approach created a relaxed environment during the sometimes bizarre sensations of the procedure.

Dr. Barr had my best interest at heart when deciding which and how much of each product to use, and I would encourage anyone considering these types of treatments to get her opinion before having any work done. Dr Lucy Barr did my rhinoplasty in April of this year and I’m over the moon with how amazing it is. Every step of the process was painless and I was given excellent care by her, her husband (Dr Sharma did my functionality surgery at the same time) and her staff. My results exceed my expectations. Colle has been doing a Med-lite treatment with me, and it has truly made a difference in the overall texture and tone of my skin.
