Regardless of your age or gender, experiencing hair loss can be a frustrating experience. There are many factors that can lead to thinning hair, and about as many remedies to attempt restoring it. What causes hair loss? There are a number of reasons your hair may be thinning or falling out:
- Genetics
- Age
- Disease – or treatments for disease
- Hormonal Changes – pregnancy, stress, imbalance
- Hair Products
- Hairstyles/Friction
- Medication
- Nutrition Deficiencies
Some of these reasons for losing your hair can be controlled while others, obviously, cannot. Let’s take a quick look at what changes you can make to help hair regrow on your own.
Remedies for Thinning Hair
Since there are a lot of variables for why someone is losing hair, not all remedies for hair loss will be successful for everyone. However, there are some remedies we think are worth trying.
Get Your Hormones Checked
If you’ve had a pregnancy, it’s worth getting your hormone levels checked after childbirth. It’s very common to experience postpartum hair loss, but if it continues for years after you’ve had your baby, there may be a deeper issue.
Additionally, people with thyroid imbalance may suffer from hair loss. If you can identify that as an issue, you and your doctor can work out a way to get your body back in balance with changes to your diet, medications, and/or supplements.
Hair Products that Cause Hair Loss
Did you know products that include diethanolamine and triethanolamine (DEA and TEA, respectively) can contribute to hair loss? There are a number of other preservatives, irritants, and oils that affect hair quality in the long run. Switching to shampoo, conditioner, and styling products with more natural ingredients can protect your hair’s natural keratin levels and can nurture your scalp rather than irritate it.
Additionally, some hairstyles can contribute to premature hair loss. For example, regularly pulling hair into tight buns, ponytails or braids can cause stress on your hair. You may also want to avoid extensions or weaves, as they also cause stress to hair follicles and can inhibit growth. Making changes to your hair products and styles can help protect the hair you have, and encourage new growth.
Supplements for Hair Growth
You can try adding some supplements to your daily routine to help your hair’s regrowth. The most popular and effective hair growth products should include keratin, collagen, biotin, and/or hyaluronic acid. These, in addition to your regular multivitamin, can give you hair a helping hand if you’re already doing what you can to baby your hair.
Hair Transplant Surgery
If you’ve explored natural hair growth options, you may want to consider hair transplant surgery. At Barr Aesthetics, we offer both surgical and non-surgical hair restoration options. When you consult with one of our staff, we can help you determine the best route for you to restore your hair’s fullness. Barr Aesthetics offers two surgical options:
- FUT – Follicular unit transplantation is the process of taking strips of follicles from the back of the head and transplanting them to areas where hair loss is prominent.
- FUE – Follicular unit extraction is the process of individually taking follicles from the back and sides of the scalp, which are then moved to areas experiencing hair loss.
Nonsurgical treatment for hair loss includes Propecia, Rogaine, Ducray hair products, and low-level light therapy. Based on your consultation, Dr. Barr and her associates will help you make an informed choice for treatment.
