Open Nose Surgery

Eyebrow lift

Cosmetic nose reshaping, or Rhinoplasty, is a common surgical procedure to change various aspects of the nose. Although this is considered a cosmetic surgery, it can be used to correct breathing problems as well. During surgery, reshaping can involve:

  • Reducing / increasing the size of the nose
  • Narrowing the nostrils
  • Changing the angle between the nose and lips
  • Change the nose tip
  • Change the bridge of the nose

Common Rhinoplasty involves the reconstruction of the cartilage, and bone of the nose. Depending on the patient, the surgeon may work from within the nose, making small incisions inside the nostrils and bridge bone areas. The surgeon may also choose to work from the outside instead, making incisions across the tissues that separate the nostrils. The latter is considered an “open” nose surgery, better known as an Open or External Rhinoplasty.

Open or External Rhinoplasty

Unlike closed Rhinoplasty, external surgery involves an incision that allows the surgeon to fold back the nasal skin, giving surgical access and visibility to the entire nasal structure. This type of rhinoplasty provides the chance for improved accuracy in the reshaping process that might otherwise be impossible during a closed rhinoplasty. This type of surgery also lowers the chance of nasal cartilage distortion and makes intricate grafting possible.

Visible scarring is more likely after healing, however scars are typically small, occurring over the narrowest portion of the nose. If a scar should appear, it would be just faintly visible. If the surgery being considered requires a greater control during reshaping or contouring, open rhinoplasty is usually the option the patient and surgeon will choose.
