Africa is a huge and diverse continent. There are hundreds of beauty culture trends that are unique to different regions. The most interesting and ancient beauty trends in African come from a variety of African tribes, some of which are even mimicked today in many parts of the world.

Lip plates are ancient beauty body modifications that are still seen today in some tribes in Africa. These are created by placing a plate at the bottom of the lip that stretches out the lip area. As a plate becomes comfortable in the area, a larger one is placed in the lip to further stretch the skin. Large bottom lips are considered very attractive in these cultures.

Body scarring is not unlike tattoos. The instruments and techniques vary. Different tribes and cultures use these markings for different things. Some markings are created specifically for aesthetic reasons, while others mark social status or crimes committed by an individual.

Body image differs greatly in cultures. Many African cultures prefer women who are heavier in body weight. This is often a sign of high social status because women in many villages do physical work every day. A heavier body represents the lack of need to work due to many children or servants.
