Pale skin was very in style in this era. It signified that an individual did not need to work outdoors or to do any garden labor. Pale skin was achieved in a variety of ways. One way was by bleeding techniques. The other was by placing cosmetics that were often toxic directly to the skin.

Light hair was in fashion and women went to great lengths to achieve this look. Many put peroxide materials on their hair and bleached it in the sun. A high forehead was considered beautiful and regal. Many women plucked their hairlines to create a large looking forehead.

Pink lipstick was often worn to make the skin appear paler. Although in different periods of the Middle Ages lipstick was forbidden and only worn by prostitutes. Women would wear small amounts and would not admit that their flush lips were not naturally pink in hue.
