In recent years, more and more women have chosen to work with plastic surgeons in order to help them maintain a more youthful appearance. No longer are facelifts restricted to lengthy, invasive procedures that leave the patient looking as though a woman has “had work done.” Instead, there are a variety of non-invasive and minimally invasive options that are a better fit for many women. The MACS facelift (Minimal Access Cranial Suspension) is one of these less-invasive procedures that women are choosing for facial rejuvenation.
What is a MACS facelift?
Pioneered in Europe, the MACS facelift is a newer procedure that is sometimes called a mini-lift or short-scar facelift. To perform the procedure, the doctor will make short incisions in front of the ear and along the hairline. Permanent sutures are used to suspend the deeper structure of the face to help reduce some of the gravitational effects of aging. Excess skin is removed, and the incisions are closed.
Who is a candidate for a MACS lift?
Since a MACS lift is subtler than traditional facelifts, it is unable to completely replace them. Men and women in their 30’s, 40’s, and early 50’s are generally the best candidates for this procedure. The effects of a MACS facelift are softer than the traditional facelift and give a refreshed outcome, rather than a redone one.
How long will the procedure take?
Many patients appreciate that a MACS lift can be completed in as little as two or three hours, compared with the typical four or more required for a traditional facelift. MACS facelifts can also be performed with local anesthesia and sedation, rather than having to undergo general anesthesia.
What can I expect from my recovery?
While the MACS facelift is minimally invasive, it is still a surgical procedure. Consequently, you will experience some swelling and bruising of the face, but it is typically much milder than what you would experience from a traditional facelift. You can expect to return to light activity within a few days and be back to work in a week or two.
Will I have scars?
As with any surgical procedure, there is a significant probability of scarring at the incision sites. Your surgeon will work to hide and minimize these scars by strategically placing them in front of the ear and along the hairline. Chances are, you will be the only one who knows they’re there.
How do I know if a MACS facelift is right for me?
Set up a consultation with an experienced plastic surgeon that is experienced in a variety of techniques and procedures. She will be able to help you identify your rejuvenation goals and recommend the best course of treatment to help you look more youthful and refreshed.
