Did you know that hair transplant surgery is the number one cosmetic treatment for men in the US? While androgenic alopecia is the main cause of male hair loss, there are actually quite a few other reasons that men lose their hair. Some of these reasons include scarring, autoimmune diseases, sickness, medications, environmental factors, and genetics. But men are not the only ones to lose their hair.
Who Do We Often Perform Surgery On?
We see women of all ages that come for hair transplant consultations. One in five women suffers from significant hair loss. Two of the most common reasons women lose their hair are because of thyroid disease and or iron deficiency.
Regardless of your gender, we want to help you. We perform many hair transplant surgeries each year and restore confidence and self-esteem to the masses. We perform FUT (follicular unit transplantation), aka “strip technique” and FUE (follicular unit extraction). Each method is performed differently and for different reasons. Dr. Barr will work with you to find the best treatment options for your specific situation.
How Should You Prepare for Your Procedure?
If you’re getting ready for your procedure, consider these preparations before your big day.
- Head Massages. Massaging your scalp for 10-20 minutes daily, starting two weeks before your procedure, can help you have a more successful surgery. This will stimulate the follicles and increase the elasticity of your scalp.
- Stay Out of the Sun. Remember that you do not want your skin exposed to the elements before your procedure. We want to operate on healthy, unburned skin. Cover up with a hat or umbrella, or stay inside until the big day is over.
- No Drinking. No alcohol one week before your procedure. This is in line with standard medical practices.
- No Supplements. The same goes for antibiotics. We do not want to take the chance of any medications of supplements interfering with medications we’ll give you pre and post-surgery. We will ask you to stop certain supplements and medications before your procedure.
- No Smoking. Smoking can slow your healing process. It is best for you to refrain from smoking at least two weeks before your procedure.
- No Tylenol. Just like if you were going under full-blown anesthesia, we do not want you to take any medication that will thin your blood. In the unlikely chance that something happens to you during your procedure, we want to lessen the risk of excessive bleeding.
- Stop Taking Hair Loss Medications. Dr. Barr will let you know what medications are okay to take in the weeks leading up to your surgery and which are not to be used before the procedure takes place.
- Follow the Doctor’s Orders. We will provide you with specific instructions before your procedure. It is imperative that you follow these so that you can have the most successful outcome possible.
