How Do Earlobes Get Damaged?
Earlobes often become damaged due to heavy earrings, gauges that stretch out earlobe tissue, or accidents wherein the earlobe is torn. Addressing the injury can prevent your ear from becoming infected or worse.
Why Do My Ears Stick Out?
Our ears contain a lot of cartilage, especially at the outer edge. The cartilage folds of the outer ears are called antihelical folds. If they don’t develop in a certain way before birth, the ears can protrude, or stick out. Additionally, if the bowl-shaped space of the ear (at the opening of the ear canal) is too deep or contains too much cartilage, this can also create protruding ears. When the ears stick out more than 2 cm from the sides of the head, they are considered protruding or prominent.
While this is perfectly normal, it can be a cause for concern for some people. Protruding ears can make us feel self-conscious. If you want to look into options for correcting protruding ears, contact Barr Aesthetics today for a consultation.
Ear Repair from Barr Aesthetics
Our plastic surgeons offer two types of surgeries to change the appearance of one’s ears: Otoplasty and Standard Ear Gauge Repair.
Otoplasty
Otoplasty is the medical term for the surgical correction of protruding ears. Whether protruding ears are genetic or the result of ear trauma, it can be done on patients as young as four years old.
What’s the Otoplasty Procedure Like?
Otoplasty involves incisions placed behind the ears, which helps hide any scarring that may remain.
Depending on what is causing your ears to protrude, cartilage will either be added or removed to augment how the ears lay on the head. You may require permanent sutures and/or internal stitches. The procedure could take anywhere between one and five hours.
The dramatic change and quick recovery time have placed otoplasty procedures among the highest in patient satisfaction of all cosmetic procedures.
Ear Gauge Repair
Earlobe gauge repair is popular for anyone who has changed their style and no longer wants to have gauged lobes. Earlobe repair can also undo the damage caused by heavy earrings, or a tear in the lobe.
How Do You Fix Gauged Ears?
Ear gauge repair procedures vary slightly depending on the size of the gauging, with larger rings requiring a more complex repair. Dr. Barr tailors the surgery to the gauged ear to reconstruct an ear lobe that is natural in contour and as close to the original as possible.
In general, though, fixing gauged earlobes involves stitching the earlobe back together. It’s a process that can take as little as 30 minutes per earlobe.
Who is a Good Candidate for Earlobe Repair?
We always recommend that people be in good general health before undergoing any type of surgical procedure. At Barr Aesthetics, we offer earlobe repair in Utah for patients who have experienced physical trauma to their lobes, such as a tear or a permanent hole due to a large gauge.
Additionally, good candidates are people who have asymmetrical lobes, whether naturally or due to aging. If you’re not sure if earlobe repair is right for you, please schedule a consultation with Barr Aesthetics so we can discuss your expectations.
