How Do I Know I Need Hair Restoration?

Regardless of age, you might start noticing your hair is changing in volume, texture, and color. Early signs of balding may vary from person to person, but typically they are:

  • Thinning hair at the temples
  • Changes to the width of the part
  • Hair loss (when washing or combing)
  • Changes in hair color
  • Changes in hair texture
  • Changes in hair volume

If hair loss isn’t remedied with a change in lifestyle, such as diet or medications, you are invited to meet with the experts at Barr Aesthetics/ We are more than happy to discuss hair restoration and hair replacement options with you.

What is Causing My Hair Loss?

Many of us experience some changes to our hair due to our genetic makeup. Thinning hair may be a trait common throughout the family. Hair loss could also be brought on by age, or any number of additional factors, such as:

  • Alopecia – various forms
  • Hormonal Changes
  • Injury to Follicles
  • Nutritional Deficiency
  • Thyroid Imbalance
  • Tinea Capitis – Fungal infection
  • Telogen Effluvium – Emotional stress or stress on the body due to medication

Whatever the cause, there are myriad treatments to be explored. Consult with your doctor to see what is causing your hair loss to move forward with the right treatment option.

Who is a Good Candidate for FUT Hair Transplants?

Both men and women see great results from hair transplants using the FUT method.

The FUT procedure is recommended for people who wear their hair long, as it’s best for covering any potential scarring that may occur. FUT hair restoration is recommended for candidates who have a large area to cover, as the extraction method for FUT transplants is much more efficient than the method used for Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE) procedures.

At Barr Aesthetics, we also consider the following when helping you decide if you’re a good candidate for FUT hair transplants:

  • FUT is best for patients with limited hair available to act as donor follicles.
  • FUT is recommended when patients want to see maximum results (coverage and volume) with a single procedure, such as someone balding at their crown.

What Does FUT Hair Transplants Treat?

Follicular unit transplantation is a highly effective method of hair restoration when there’s a significant need for coverage.

How Much Do FUT Hair Transplants Cost?

WebMD estimates that the average FUT hair transplant can cost between $4,000 and $15,000. To narrow down a more accurate estimate, a consultation with Barr Aesthetics is required. The amount of coverage you need will affect the final cost of the FUT procedure.

Are Hair Transplants Covered by Insurance?

As with many plastic surgery procedures, if they’re being performed solely for cosmetic reasons, it isn’t likely to be covered by insurance. However, if you’re having FUT transplants to remedy a medical condition (i.e. hair loss due to alopecia), it’s possible you could get partial insurance coverage for the procedure.

When consulting with Barr Aesthetics about your hair transplant in Utah, discuss the reasons for surgery; if it’s more than just cosmetic, you can take that information to your insurance provider to discuss coverage. You may need to submit proof that the hair transplant is due to a medical condition, which you can obtain from your doctor and/or our offices.

Is FUT for Men or Women?

While it may be more common for men to lose their hair and turn to hair transplantation as a remedy, FUT is a procedure available to both men and women. FUT is popular for treating pattern baldness, which is often seen in male patients. However, the procedure has proven effective for patients of either gender and is popular with people who wear their hair long to easily mask scarring.

What’s the FUT Transplant Procedure Like?

Here at Barr Aesthetics, we give our patients specific instructions for preparing for their procedure, as well as recommendations for aftercare. Patients should understand that they could experience some discomfort during or after the procedure, but pain and sensitivity of the area are carefully managed with a local anesthetic, and we can also offer medications to reduce anxiety.

Process: The transplant process for FUT involves removing individual hair follicles from another area on the patient’s scalp. Once extracted, the donor follicles are transplanted to the thinning area of the scalp. Once placed, the donor follicles continue in their normal growth cycle, creating a full, natural-looking, and self-sustaining head of hair.

The FUT technique is sometimes also known as the “strip” method or strip grafting since the follicles are harvested from a strip of the removed tissue. This often leads to more effective harvesting, allowing dense transplant placement over a wider area.

Results: The results of any hair transplant procedure depend on the skill of your physician. In a FUT transplant, donor hairs must be carefully extracted by a specialist and then placed with a keen eye for natural hair growth patterns, including direction of growth, distribution over an area, and natural hairline. Dr. Barr and her team have the skills and experience to deliver beautiful results for patients, creating a head of hair indistinguishable from natural, healthy growth.

What’s the difference between FUE and FUT?

An FUT hair transplant is just one option for patients at Barr Aesthetics; we also offer FUE hair transplants. Both of them work in generally the same way: harvesting donor follicles and transplanting them directly to the area affected by balding. The place where these two methods diverge is the process by which donor hairs are harvested.

FUT hair transplants obtain donor follicles from a thin strip of skin tissue removed from the scalp. Donor hairs are taken from this tissue and then implanted.

FUE hair transplants, on the other hand, harvest donor follicles directly from a donor area of the scalp. FUE transplants are a relatively newer procedure, so they can be more time-consuming and more expensive. However, thanks to the reduced scarring and shorter recovery time, many patients choose FUE transplants.

Which Hair Transplant Procedure is Better?

FUT transplants are a time-tested and well-established technique. However, just because this technique is older doesn’t mean that it will look like old-fashioned “hair plugs.” On the contrary, except for minor scarring, the results of a FUT transplant are indistinguishable from an FUE transplant.

Both procedures will give you a beautiful, natural, and full appearance. FUT transplants are often recommended to patients with advanced hair loss since there’s a higher harvest and success rate of donor follicles in this extraction approach. Ultimately, which approach is right for you will depend on several factors, and it’s best to consult with a professional as you make your decision.

FUT Hair Transplant FAQs

As mentioned, you may have a linear scar no bigger than 1mm, which is due to the removal of hair follicles to be transplanted. The scar will most likely be well hidden by your hair, which is why we recommend this method for patients who already wear their hair long.

Since your own hair is used as donor follicles for FUT transplantation, the results look extremely natural. The sophisticated nature of the procedure tends to produce results that make it hard to detect if a transplant ever occurred.

Although a FUT hair transplant doesn’t have the same time demands as an FUE procedure, patients should still expect at least a few hours, depending on the number of grafts needed.

Some patients see desired results after one FUT procedure while others require additional transplants. We’ll discuss the best course of action for you at our consultation. If hair loss is caused by genetics, additional transplants may be required to maintain the results.

Since the implanted hair needs to start a new growth cycle, you’ll see the results of your FUT transplant in four to six months. By the one-year mark, you should see up to 50% of hair growth.

After 18 months, the full results of the transplant should be apparent.

Most people don’t need more than a day or two to rest and recover after FUT restoration procedures. The donor site heals quickly, allowing you to return to normal activities the week of your transplant.

It is typically safe to use a mild shampoo and a gentle touch on the scalp three days after your hair transplant. In the meantime, you can shower or bathe without washing or wetting your hair or scalp. Specific aftercare instructions will be provided when you have a procedure at Barr.

A hair transplant is a relatively low-risk procedure, but there may be side effects, such as swelling, bleeding, or numbness.

Is FUT Hair Restoration Right for Me?

To determine whether or not you’re a good candidate for hair restoration therapy, meet with our professionals for an evaluation. Dr. Barr and her team have had many years of experience offering FUT hair transplants to patients throughout Salt Lake.

During your consultation, your physician will discuss options available for your specific case, and make recommendations about the best treatment for you. Together, you’ll look over before and after photographs of actual patients who have a similar case so you can get an idea of what to expect from your hair restoration procedure.
