Living in Utah, you’re probably not a stranger to having dry, flaky skin. Taking care of your skin is important no matter where you live, but it’s especially important when you live in a dry climate like Utah.

When you live somewhere with a considerable amount of moisture in the air, your hair won’t be brittle, and your skin will be soft. But living where it’s dry will do the same thing to your hair and skin.

Moisturize

Because there isn’t enough moisture in the air, you’ll have to compensate by applying a moisturizer topically on a regular basis. This is important for the skin on your entire body, but especially on your face. The skin on your face is thinner than on the other parts of your body, which makes it more susceptible to damage. Pick a good quality, thick lotion or body butter for the skin on your body, and make sure you apply it every day after you shower. For your face, you’ll want to choose something that absorbs well and doesn’t clog your pores. You’ll probably have to choose a few different moisturizers until you find the one that works best for your skin. It’s a good idea to go to Sephora, Ulta, or a department store, and ask one of the consultants for their recommendations for moisturizers, and then take home multiple samples of different types. This gives you a chance to find what really works for your skin without investing hundreds of dollars in lotions that don’t work for your skin type.

Hydrate

No matter how much lotion you put on your skin, it will continue to be dry if you don’t hydrate from within as well. Adults should be drinking 8 8-ounce glasses of water a day, which is about 48 ounces of water everyday. This should be the minimum you drink if you live in a dry climate, so if you already drink 48 ounces of water everyday but you still experience dry skin, you may want to increase this amount. Especially if you exercise heavily, because you’re losing water through your sweat.

Exfoliate

Because of the dry climate, you’ll want to exfoliate the dry and dead skin off of your face. Use a soft exfoliant for everyday use, and then select something heavier duty to be used once a week. Exfoliating your skin gives your skin a chance to breathe, because you’re removing the dead skin that’s in the way.
